New here, Hi!

Postby Sven » January 13th, 2017 03:19 AM

Hi everyone, I'm new here and have a '97 EX wagon pushing 350k miles with an f22b1!
My plans are to replace the engine and trans, either with another f22b1 or h22a, although some things I consider are cost, and the fact that I would like to keep the trans auto. A little extra power wouldn't hurt though. I bet when I replace the engine even with a f22b1 I'll notice a boost from a lower mileage engine anyways.

The body is green and is a bit of a fixer upper. Same with the interior.
I'll be posting some questions about various things in the days to come, glad to be here!

You have the highest power engine ever put into a wagon, although not by much. And I don't think there is much aftermarket support for the F22B1.

Another consideration is that you have OBDII. This doesn't make it impossible to swap in an H22A, but it does make it a little harder (for example, you can't tune the engine without converting to OBDI - which is illegal if you are in an area with and inspection program). Most H22A swaps are into a manual, so keeping the auto might be a bit of a problem (although I really don't know, as I've never owned an automatic). And keep in mind that the H22A engines are really old, too, so you might have to rebuild the H22A as well or pay a lot to get one in good shape.

*cough@ ahem ;)

5th gen preludes were OBD2?
so a H22a from a 5th Gen prelude would be a possible idea?

Yes, the 5th gen Preludes (1997-2001) were all OBD2. And the H22A engine was standard in the 5th gen Prelude. Which also means that there are some 5th gen Preludes with automatic transmissions (although the large majority were sold with manuals).

Swapping in a US 5th gen Prelude engine would help with the swap, as long as you don't do other engine modifications and use the appropriate Prelude OBD2 ECU (although there are still a host of wiring and other issues). The problem is that Honda didn't sell a lot of Preludes in the US and these engines are hard to find. The easiest way to get an H22A engine is to import one from Japan - and none of those engines were OBD2 compliant.

:bear: Hi again I finally got my photos let’s see if this works. From what I can tell. If you click on the photo below it’ll take you to my album with several photos.
Image

I scored 4 doors from a leather interior same year, same color and no dents. Mine were very dented.I swapped the rears and not the fronts yet. You can see I modified the rear leather door panel to fit the rear speakers and had to swap the wiring in the door so it would plug in and power the speakers, and the chrome trim you see on the rear doors I am going to paint black with plasti-dip I think. Also I’m going to re-finish the black rubber and plastic parts.

Work done so far in the last two years - replaced broke auto trans with junkyard auto trans, new o2 sensors and speed sensor (cleaned connectors on this and it turned out it was just dirty. The Odometer says 215,98x but trust me it’s more around 350xxx), new axles/cv joints, cleaned EGR ports, new rotors and pads, timing belt and associated gaskets, valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket.

Headlights are new, and you can see the cosmetic work that’s needed. Both front side fenders need replaced, lost my snow chains on the right side and got dented bad on the left. The rear door has a crack in the paint from an old bondo coverup job done I assume over 10 years ago and you can see the cheap clear coat from that job coming off the hatch.
I have a tow hitch as you can see which adds a bit of versatility.

Now I’m thinking of keeping the f22b1, and rebuilding it and adding a turbo and upgraded suspension and lower it about 1.5”. What do you guys think? I’m no pro but I love this car and love working with it.

Btw I’m missing the rear cargo cover if anyone has one they’re into selling.
