F22A cheap engine build

I haven't been on this site for a long time, but I'm getting the itch to buy another Accord wagon. So, I've been doing some research on engine mods. I've found that it is possible to make a lot of power from the F22A engine (used on 4th gen 90-93 Accord). It has much better head air flow than the F22B and F23B engines used in later Accords. Not as good as the H22, but probably about the same as the H23.

For 5th gen owners, it probably isn't worth trying to swap in the cheap mods I'll discuss here, especially if you have the EX SOHC VTEC, as you will need to swap in an F22A head (I'm pretty sure that the F22A head will bolt onto the F22B block, although I'm still trying to confirm).

In this post, I'll list what I've learned about a cheap way to get some additional power from the F22A1, used in the 90-93 DX and LX Accord.
- Header from the F22A4 (used in 90-91 SE/EX Accord). This is a tubular designed header, similar to that used for the H23A. It added 5 hp to the stock F22A1.
- Camshaft from the F22A6 (used in 92-93 SE/EX Accord). Slightly more aggressive cam than used on the F22A1
- Intake manifold from the H23A1 (92-96 Prelude Si). Also need the F22A6 IAB "black box" to activate the secondary runners. Throttle body is the same as F22A.
- ECU from F22A6 or 92-96 Prelude S (F22A1) - more aggressive performance tune.
- Intake - cheap short-ram
- Exhaust - basic 2.25"

This will likely bump you to 150-155 hp.

Well i have the F22A6 in my ex so BHP is 140 ive but some bolt ons...but are you saying itd be a good idead to put the H23 head on it? maybe a bigger throttle body? 70mm?

The F22A6 has most of the good stuff, such as a little better camshaft, more aggressively tuned ECU, better intake manifold, even a windage tray in the oil pan.

The F22A head flows every bit as good as the H23 head, so don't worry about that.

The H23 intake manifold should be a bit better than the F22A6 intake manifold, but I don't know if it is enough better for it to be worthwhile to make the swap.

The main think you need is the F22A4 header, or a decent aftermarket header, and a bit better exhaust.

Forget about the throttle body unless you make major mods. The H22A, which makes 200 hp, uses the same 60mm throttle body as all of the F22 engines. Unless you get over 200 hp, the stock throttle body is just fine.

I've read that a f22a6 with the h23 manifold and f22a4 header when tuned can make up to 160 hp with about 17% loss to the wheels so about 133 to the wheels.

Yes, that's the right setup for a cheap step-up in performance. 160 engine hp should be about right - might be a few hp less.

Yea I think it would definitely be dyno tuned to get the 160 hp. Might be worth the cost to have 160 hp from what most Honda guys think is junk. I love the f22.

Would it be smart to use a F22A6 Head as well or just the header and camshaft?
